Sustainability

Good design is intrinsically sustainable. It begins with a thorough review of the project, including current program and rationale. Can we repurpose an existing structure? Refine the building’s uses? Rethink the proposed footprint? Only when we are satisfied that the building design responds intelligently to the environment, do we proceed.

Essentials

We strive to make buildings that have a strong sense of belonging, in terms of both the immediate setting and the world at large. This begins, obviously, by looking at all the essentials – site, design, materials, light and air. Whenever possible we’ll select reclaimed wood from an existing project, repurposed stone and/or source local and sustainable supplies. Our work is designed to celebrate natural materials along with light and fresh air, vital elements for healthy buildings and happy inhabitants.

Stewardship

As designers we believe that sustainability goes far beyond professional responsibility. As stewards of the land, we appreciate that the decisions we make, both as professionals and individuals, profoundly influence the world we live in. We are committed to using our expertise to make the world a better place to be. In light of this attitude both principals at Openspace have designed their own homes to embody these environmental values. We gratefully share this vision.
